Denton Animal Shelter Approved

The city of Denton is a step closer to getting a new animal shelter. City council members informally approved plans to buy a 20-acre tract next to North Lakes Park. Supporters want to build a 22,000 square-foot facility, which is three times larger than the current shelter. The new facility would help the city meet future demand and allow for more animal adoptions.

The Denton Holiday Lighting Ceremony of 2008 kicked off the holidays in cold weather style. "For many Denton residents, the festival represents the true start to the Christmas season. Started as a modest gathering in 1988, the event has matured into a holiday ritual, drawing ever-larger crowds to the Square for music, children’s crafts, horse-drawn carriage rides and pictures with Santa. The all-volunteer, nonprofit Denton Holiday Festival Association works all year to stage the event on the Thursday after Thanksgiving."

Denton County: Democrats, Republicans agree on paper ballots

The leaders of both Denton County political parties are united in their preference for paper ballots in the upcoming Presidential election, according to a joint statement released this week.

Neil Durrance, chairman of the Democrats, and Dianne Edmondson, the Republican chairman, are urging voters to choose a paper ballot when they vote to assure that their vote will count. “Our citizens face many troubling and complex issues these days. Whether or not your vote counts, should not be one of them,” Durrance says.

Edmondson agrees, pointing out that in the event of a recount due to a close race, or for any reason, “The paper ballot provides the physical and tangible proof necessary to assure that each vote counts and the will of the people at the ballot box is carried out.”'

Toll road agency votes to borrow $100 million from Bank of America

The North Texas Tollway Authority's board of directors voted unanimously this morning to borrow $100 million as the agency scrambles to retire the last $225 million in short-term debt used to finance its 2007 purchase of the State Highway 121 toll road contract.

The loan from Bank of America -- one of the few financial giants to have so far emerged unscathed from the Wall Street crisis -- is designed to help NTTA whittle away at a debt it must retire by Nov. 19, when a 12-month deadline expires on "bond anticipation notes" the agency took out to pay for the State Highway 121 toll road contract.

Middle school’s state rating moves up

Aubrey Superintendent James Monaco announced Wednesday that state accountability ratings for the school district’s middle school will be elevated from “recognized” to “exemplary” due to an appeal granted by the Texas Education Agency.

On Aug. 14, the district requested that TEA recalculate and adjust the accountability rating for the school. The district stated in its letter that an economically disadvantaged student’s writing results should not be counted in the accountability ratings determination with other Aubrey Middle School students because the pupil tested in another district.

Fountain rejuvenated

Denton city leaders and Rotary Club members will gather today behind City Hall to dedicate a newly refurbished fountain.

The once-idle fountain got a nearly $30,000 makeover, thanks in part to a $15,000 donation from the Denton South Rotary Club. The Rotary Memorial Fountain now features a granite monument dedicated to three deceased club leaders: Brandon Barnes, Glenn Puyear and Howard Stone.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission on Aug. 21 approved $10 million in competitive parks and recreation grants for city and county parks and other sites across the state. Grant project descriptions are listed by county below.
Dallas, Travis County, San Antonio and Houston were each awarded $1 million from TPWD’s Urban Outdoor Recreation Grants program. Houston was also awarded $1 million from TPWD’s Indoor Recreation Grants program.

A Denton pizza worker said she was surprised when a fellow employee overpowered a would-be robber -- and even more surprised by who the bad guy turned out to be.

As Stephanie Martinez was getting money out of a cash drawer, a co-worker, Rudy Sandoval, fought back against the intruder, knocking off his wig and sunglasses.

Study: Dallas-Fort Worth Homes are Undervalued

While the buzz in the housing market these days is about popping price bubbles, a new national study says that Dallas-Fort Worth has one of the most undervalued housing markets in the country.

Texas markets are also showing resilience in the face of nationwide home value drops, according to Tuesday's report released by research firm Global Insight and financial holding company National City Corp.

Homes in Dallas are 30 percent undervalued and Fort Worth homes are almost 25 percent undervalued, researchers say, based on their estimates of where housing prices should be in North Texas.

To come up with its valuation estimates, Global Insight says it determines what home prices should be in the area, accounting for differences in population density, relative income levels, interest rates and historically observed market premiums or discounts.

The DFW area is near the top of the list of cities with the most undervalued housing. Houston and College Station were also high on the list.

The Student Government Association held its first meeting of the summer Senate Monday afternoon under relaxed rules of order and an equally relaxed checkbook. According to the 2007-2008 fiscal year budget, the SGA has a budget surplus of more than $42,000 for the 2007 summer Senate, and it passed a bevy of legislation that allocated about $16,000.

Since joining the Texas Collegiate League in 2005, the Denton Outlaws have been an instant success on and off the field. During their inaugural season in 2005, the Outlaws won the league's championship and nearly did so again the next year but fell to the McKinney Marshals in the championship series.
